Multimodal sensor based on lidar for underwater environmental sensing

The MARINEROS project develops a multimodal underwater sensor with RGB and polarimetric cameras, lidar, and multibeam sonar for unmanned underwater vehicles. The main challenge is to achieve a reliable underwater lidar, difficult due to the absorption and scattering of water. By fusing data, the sensor will improve images, 3D mapping, and feature detection. It will be tested in external facilities and applied to mapping, inspection, and marine zoology, promoting underwater autonomy.
