Smart cities

Enabling data collection on air quality, traffic, or water levels for improved resource management, are examples of photonics applications in smart cities.

Photonics-based sensors also support efficient lighting systems, high-resolution displays, and high-speed communication networks, essential for traffic control, surveillance, and metering. Specific examples include Barcelona's air quality and traffic monitoring, London's adaptive lighting systems, or Singapore's networked traffic control and surveillance. Photonics is still in its early stages in smart cities, with potential for further transformative applications in the close future.
