CD6 participates in the new UPC 6GLabNet infrastructure through the 6G-EWOC project and its spin-off BEAMAGINE

09/04/2026
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) has launched 6GLabNet, a pioneering scientific and technological infrastructure in Spain and a state-of-the-art facility in Europe to experiment with 5G+ and 6G communication technologies combined with artificial intelligence (AI).

This hybrid network of 32 km of optical fiber connects the Diagonal North Campus and the Baix Llobregat Campus, enabling the development and validation of technological solutions in real and controlled environments, with latency below one millisecond and high reliability. 6GLabNet integrates AI as a service for autonomous and intelligent network management, facilitating the testing of cutting-edge applications such as assisted driving, advanced robotics, drones, and augmented reality.

The CD6 – Centre for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Development of the UPC has participated through the 6G-EWOC project, developing an experimental vehicle equipped with optical sensors and AI systems to research new solutions for autonomous driving. This collaboration also involves BEAMAGINE, a CD6 spin-off company specialized in lidar and 3D vision technology for intelligent mobility applications.

The launch of 6GLabNet consolidates the UPC as an international reference node in research and validation of 6G communication technologies with AI, and reinforces the role of CD6 in advancing optical and photonic applications for the mobility of the future.

The project has been funded with 4 million euros from the European Horizon 2020 programme through the UNICO R&D 6G programme of the Spanish Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function.
