Innovations in Biophotonics for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Visual Anomalies

Biophotonics is an interdisciplinary field that combines principles from biology, physics, and engineering using technologies based on light. This is a key field in the advancement of medical diagnostics and therapy, and in particular, it has a strong implementation in the field of vision. However, the implementation of photonic tools is not equal among specialities, and there is a lack of progress in three areas that could benefit from new developments in biophotonics, which are: 1) early detection in paediatric population, 2) cognitive impairment diagnosis using ocular biomarkers and 3) ocular refraction.

The general objective of the InBioVis project is to develop photonic tools for the early diagnosis and treatment of visual anomalies in paediatric population, cognitive impairment diagnosis and ocular refraction. More specifically, the project will carry out research in photonics-based technologies and machine learning algorithms to develop systems based on eye tracking technology and autorefractometers (photorefraction and aberrometry). A substantial part of the project will be devoted to clinically validating the developed systems and their clinical applications.

To accomplish the general objective, this project is structured into three Work Packages (WPs), WP1: Design, development and implementation of a screening device and tests for the early detection of risk factors for anomalous vision development and monitor the efficacy of clinical treatments, WP2: Application of photonic based technologies for the diagnosis and management of cognitive impairments, and WP3: Head-mounted accommodation monitoring and refraction system.
