Project

Development of a new instrument for the evaluation in vitro of the optical quality of intraocular lenses by means of the double-pass technique (CALIO).

Summary

Nowadys, there is an increasing number of surgery operations to correct eye-related problems. Specifically, the use of Intraocular Lenses (IOL) is widely use to deal with problems associated with aging, including cataracts, high ametropia or other eye diseases. The success of these operations is significant and the main contributing factors are the optical quality of intraocular lens and the correct choice according to the characteristics of the patient's eye.

The project involves the development of a technique of in vitro testing of intraocular lenses for optical quality assessment using the double-pass technique. This project arises from the real need to evaluate the optical quality of IOLs in a fast, reliable and accurate way. It should be noted that many IOLs are manufactured and deployed today, and therefore it is essential to perform appropriate checks on their quality, both at the design and manufacturing stages.

This project adaptats the entire methodology for measuring in vivo to the in vitro scenario, and includes the design and construction of a prototype of an artificial eye that takes into account different axial lengths according to the various commecually available IOL powers. All the studies are done under a strict control of the IOL's position on the artificial eye since minor offsets or inclinations can distort the results. Given the small size of an IOL (about 6 mm in diameter) and the needs of accuracy in positioning, the system is motorized and controlled from a computer. In addition, it has also addressed the control of the artificial eye position relative to the double-pass measure, as small movements or inclinations would give false results. This is achieved using a camera that allows for the correct positioning.
