New scientific equipment for CD6

The CD6 of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) will expand, through funding from the Call for Scientific and Technical Equipment of the Spanish Research Agency, its equipment for the rapid prototyping of optical and photonics devices (Photon-FAB Project). The investment will allow the extension of the equipment of the photometry laboratory and the encapsulation of optoelectronic devices, which will be funded with 749,000 euros from the call. The grant is funded by the European Commission's Next Generation Fund and a total of four have been awarded to the UPC.

Optical and photonic technologies are a key element in scientific and technological development, due to the transversality and enabling nature of their applications. These types of devices are used from frontier research to innovation, affecting virtually all areas of knowledge. Its development process includes optical design, photometric simulation, electronic and mechanical design, prototyping, subsystem integration, and specification validation, all of which are developed in CD6.

In this field, the new equipment of the photometry laboratory will allow extending the capabilities of the centre in optical characterization, colour measurements and reproduction, and polarization of light, both light sources and detectors or optical components, for research and innovation activities. This includes research activities in a wide variety of fields, such as Industry 4.0, Automotive, Electronics, Internet of Things or Health. The encapsulation equipment reinforces the current prototyping capabilities of the CD6 and will make it possible to design and manufacture custom lighting sources, where the encapsulation is part of the optical system, thus allowing more compact and precise optical devices to be built.

As Santiago Royo, director of CD6 and head of aid, explains, "this equipment will be a very important qualitative leap in the service provided to UPC research groups and to external entities and companies, as they will allow to carry out activities of innovative research that requires simulation and colour measurement, characterization of materials with polarized light, propagation of light in turbid media, such as in fog or smoke situations, manufacture of new optoelectronic devices or medical imaging, among others.
