Accommodative response measurement system with a double-pass system. Application to the study of the accommodation as a function of age

On October 22nd, Mikel Aldba defended his doctoral thesis titled Accommodative response measurement system with a double-pass system. Application to the study of the accommodation as a function of age.

The PhD thesis was directed by Professor Jaume Pujol and Professor Montserrat Arjona from CD6.

Abstract:

Accommodation, defined as the dioptric change of the eye, enables us clear vision at different distances. Its study is interesting due to different aspects: the progressive lost of amplitude of accommodation known as presbyopia, the recent interest in accommodative restauration techniques in pseudophakic patients, its possible relation to myopia development and the associated pathologies.

The goal of this thesis has been to develop a method based on the double pass technique for the accommodative response measurement and its application to the study of accommodation with age.

A method for measuring the accommodative response based on the double pass technique has been developed and validated by comparison with Hartmann-Shack measurements. The method developed has been applied in the study of age related changes in accommodation.

From the work carried out in this thesis we can conclude that: we have shown the usefulness of the double pass technique for measuring accommodative response, the accommodative response measured with this technique is higher than the response measured just based on defocus and we have made contributions for a better understanding of the changes in accommodation with age.
