Outcomes of the ‘3D Skin Tumour Analyzer’ project

The '3D skin tumour analyser' project has been carried out at the CD6 centre by the optical metrology group with experience in 3D structured light technologies, within the framework of the call for grants IdC 2019 - Producte of AGAUR - Generalitat de Catalunya. The project will conclude soon and during its 18 months lifetime we obtained interesting results, including the following ones:

  • A compact, lightweight, ergonomic 3D sensor with a user-friendly software interface has been developed for use in dermatological clinics for measuring the three-dimensional morphology of skin cancer lesions. Two versions have been prototyped: one coupled to a medical cart that allows the equipment to be moved between different rooms in the clinic, and another of smaller size and weight designed for bulkyless spaces in the clinic (see images). Hardware and software tests have been carried out to verify the prototype’s performance, and have been documented.
  • A method for analysing the 3D images of lesions based on neural networks has been investigated and implemented with the aim of performing an automatic detection whether the lesion is melanoma (malignant) or nevus (benign).

  • The technology has been presented to dermatologists with expertise in skin cancer at Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Pontevedra, Clínica Almagro Derma, and Hospital Abente y Lago. Likewise, the project has been presented in 2 scientific congresses: the AI for Industry International Congress (April 28th and 29th, 2021) and the XIII National Meeting of Optics (November 22nd, 23rd and 24th, 2021) with a couple of publications associated.

  • Participation in a technology transfer training conducted by UPF Barcelona School of Management, which has allowed to progress in the business model associated with the project along with the protection of the invention.

This project has been co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and has the support of the Secretaria d’Universitats i Recerca of the Departament d’Empresa i Coneixement - Generalitat de Catalunya.
