Railway infrastructure inspection with LIDAR

In July 2019, the execution of the CIFIL project has been completed, in which CD6 has contributed by developing a tailored LIDAR system for the validation of railway catenary facilities. The biggest challenge of the project was to develop a LIDAR system that could detect multiple measuring points on a catenary cable only 2 cm wide, while positioning the catenary in the same reference system. CD6 has developed a customized system based on a rotary LIDAR with built-in odometer and IMU that allows both track and catenary profile to be measured without changing baseline. The high-resolution LIDAR developed was integrated into a track-mounted mechanical assembly. Different measurements have been made in both the open and tunnel sections, allowing the 3D characterization of the facilities with satisfactory results.

The project has been developed in collaboration with Telice SL, the University of León and the Idonial Technology Center

This project RTC-2016-5166-4 has been funded by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness in the framework of the Thematic Objective of the Operational Program  "Promoting quality technological development, innovation and research"
