Photonic technologies for 3D detection

The Sensors, Instrumentation and Systems Development Center (CD6 UPC) and BEAMAGINE, SL, spin-offs of the same center, have begun their participation in the European project VIZTA (Vision, Identification and Z-sensing Technologies and key Applications - Applications and In-depth vision and identification technologies).
VIZTA aims to capitalize on and develop technologies and components in the field of optical sensors and light sources for 3D detection of short (up to 5 m), medium (up to 60 m) and long range (more than 100 m) , and prove their value in a variety of applications including automotive, security, smart buildings, mobile robotics for smart cities and Industry 4.0.

Among the technologies that will be developed during the execution of the project, CD6 and BEAMAGINE will work in the field of automotive, and their activities will be focused on long-range detection using LIDAR (Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging). In particular, the UPC and Beamagine will act as specifiers of the detectors and light sources developed in the different European laboratories of the consortium related to this application, and will carry out the tasks of design, construction and integration of the different components into operational prototypes. its benefits. Long-range lidars are a key component in the development of the future autonomous car's sensor set, at the limit of component specifications and available regulations. There are a number of technologies competing to achieve the right performance in a car-sized market.

The kick-off of the project took place in Paris on May 20 and 21. VIZTA, with a duration of 42 months, is funded through the Horizon 2020 Program, in particular in the JU ECSEL (Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership) initiative, co-funded with Spain. The participating transnational consortium brings together 23 partners from 9 European countries with a total budget of 88 million euros and is led by ST Microelectronics (France). Within the consortium involves six Spanish partners (4 Catalan), with a national budget of 5 million euros, making it the largest collaborative project linked to the Photonics Industry has been done in Spain.
