PICEO - Micro-injection machine for Photonic Integrated Circuits encapsulation with optical performance using thermoplastic materials

Under the funding of the program Convocatòria d’Industria del Coneixement for the year 2016, Modalitat B, Producte, of the Agencia de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR), the PICEO project ends after 18 months of successful development. At the end of the project the process of manufacturing integrated photonic circuits (PIC) by over-moulding thermoplastic materials with a micro-injection process has been validated. This new process to encapsulate the active optical elements in PIC devices and to embed the optical elements of the PIC to provide optical functionality, opens up innovative design possibilities for improved functionality and longevity and, in doing so, redefines the optical design and manufacturing landscape. The technology developed during the project has allowed the protection of intellectual property through a patent. Given the potential of the process and the optical quality of the components generated, as next steps, a complete demonstrator will be developed for the possible companies interested in this new technology.

This project has been cofunded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union within the framework of the Operative Programme of Catalonia 2014-2020.
