DIAGNOPTICS - Optics for skin cancer diagnose

DIAGNOPTICS is a European project coordinated by CD6 and focused on the development of optical devices and clinical procedures for the improvement of diagnosis and prognosis of skin cancer.

The project included the design and development of a new in vivo platform that integrates four different optical devices (a multispectral device and a 3D scanner developed by CD6, an OFI image system from INPT and a confocal reflectance microscope from MAVIG GmbH ). This platform has been implemented as a pilot service in two European hospitals: Hospital Clínic i Provincial de Barcelona (HCPB) and Azienda Policlinico Hospital of Modena of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Unimore). The in vivo platform has been validated with patients from both hospitals by examining more than 600 lesions of a wide range of types: melanomas, BCCs, SCC, seborrheic keratosis, nevus, etc. The in vivo platform allows a more complete and accurate characterization of the lesion than the methods currently used. Promising results have been obtained in the discrimination between nevus and malignant lesions, with sensitivities and specificities beyond dermoscopy.

The project has also included ex vivo analysis of suspicious excised tissues using a confocal scanning microscope developed by MAVIG GmbH. Tests have been performed in the two hospitals mentioned above. This device means a revolution in surgical practice due to its ability to determine tumor margins with high precision, surpassing the current histopathological method that requires its execution outside the operating room and at the same time, considerably reducing the time required.

The final meeting of the project took place on 25th January 2017 in Hospital Clinic i Provincial de Barcelona. The deliverables and achievements of the last year period, together with a demo of the in vivo and ex vivo platforms working in the hospital, were presented to the Project Officer and to the pannel of independent reviewers. DIAGNOPTICS finishes with all the scientific and technological objectives fully achieved and places the technology at a stage closer to its commercialization.

The project was financed by the European Union through project CIP-621066-DIAGNOPTICS.
