High resolution 3D topography for tool marks analysis

Having objective and quantifiable, is one of the needs of experts who are dedicated to the analysis of marks caused by all kinds of tools. In this field, we are beginning to use systems that generate 3D topography of brands in high resolution and allow a detailed analysis of its form and roughness. Sensofar-tech spin-off CD6 has developed software that can help SensoMATCH forensics teams in the process of comparing surface marks. This software allows you to customize and automate comparisons helping to reduce the time needed for their evaluation.

On May 30, Cristina Cadevall  of CD6 presented at 47th Annual Association of Firearms and Tool Mark Examiners Training Seminar, where he gave a seminar on "Quantitative measurement and automated bullet Comparison using high-resolution optical 3D surface metrology" along with members Sensofar LLC and FBI Labs.

Seminar topics:

• The measurement of a three-dimensional surface of each individual land on a bullet using a high-resolution confocal microscope.
• The methods to identify, process and extract the portion of the three-dimensional surface with identifying characteristics
• The comparison of two three dimensional land surfaces
• The comparison of two bullets. A matrix analysis of the comparison data using all of the lands measured sequentially enables the user to calculate a robust comparison score
• A software package to batch compare large quantities of bullets
• A review of the above analysis method using the NIST Hamby bullet set
