Campus de Terrassa and Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, European hotspots in laser imaging skin cancer diagnosis

On March 31st and April 1st Joan Salvado auditorium of the School of Optics and Optometry (FOOT) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the Miquel Servet auditorium of the Hospital Clínic Barcelona will host an international conference with over 30 engineers, physicists and doctors from all over Europe, specialists in laser imaging techniques applied to the diagnosis of skin cancer. The conference is organized by the Centre for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Development (CD6) of UPC and the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST).

The development of lasers in the infrared frequencies, access to relevant areas of the skin related to tumor growth and the range of photonic techniques that can be applied in this region, have allowed extremely advanced techniques for early detection of skin cancer, such as 3D imaging, spectroscopy, multispectral imaging, confocal microscopy, Raman imaging or lab-on-chip techniques.

This technology is providing new information to dermatologists previously unknown in the field of early detection of skin cancer, which is considered key to curing disease. Therefore, the European network for Laser Imaging for Skin Cancer Detection with the support of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COSTBM1205) and CD6 UPC, have organized an international conference in order to foster networking with doctors, engineers and industrial laboratories to improve their interaction in the field of optical biosensors. The aim is to jointly explore innovations in specific biomedical applications that improve the effectiveness of early diagnosis of skin cancer.
