Development of new techniques and advanced instrumentation for clinical evaluation of eye's optical quality and color measurement in industrial applications of high interest

Summary

The project lies in the context of two research fields of hight scientific and technological interest, visual optics and
color technology. The aim is the development of new techniques and advanced instrumentation based on
optoelectronic image capture devices.
In the visual optics field, two different developments are going to be carried out that could be implemented in a
clinical environment: a new sensor for the ocular aberrations measurement which will improve the performance
of those which are already being used and another system for the objective evaluation of the intraocular scattered
light, which does not currently exist. Their application is placed in a field of great social impact that is vision
improvement.
In the color technology field, we are going to develop advanced instrumentation in order to overcome some of the
most important limitations that the instruments for color measurements based on image sensors have. In the
same way, new instrumentation for the goniometric measurement of special colors (metallic, pearly ) or color of 3-
D objects. These instruments, which could be built as intelligent sensors in automatic production cells, will allow
us to obtain the spectral characterization and color measurement of a surface with only one register, and with a
customized spatial resolution, depending on the application, much higher than in convencional systems.
The project is focused on applied research and technological developments and the results can be of application
in many different fields of social and industrial interest such as biomedical, ophthalmic and biochemical areas,
textile, colorants, plastics and paint industries, multimedia technology etc. In the project several different
applications are included, with the collaboration of different technological institutes and companies, which are
interested in the planned results and their possible industrial implementation.
