New methods and instrumentation to study the human eye optics and multispectral images.

Summary

This coordinated project is situated in the context of two fields of investigation with a great interest such as the physiological optics and the colour are, and its main objective is to develop new methods and instrumentation in physiological optics and multispectral systems.
In the field of physiological optics three main objectives will be tackled:

i) Development of new sensors to measure the optical quality of the eye, which can improve the features of those used nowadays, with
special emphasis on the possibility of their integration into systems that allow an integral evaluation of the ocular optics.

ii) Study of the dynamic of aberrations and ocular optical quality during the accommodation process in order to develop an instrument that allows solving the problem of the objective measurement of accommodation and pseudo-accommodation in clinics.

iii) Study of the multifocality in the human eye by means of developing new techniques for the evaluation in vivo and in vitro of the compensating systems of refraction and presbyopia, specially multifocal that will allow to make progress in the knowledge and understanding of the behaviour of the human visual system when different images are formed on the retina simultaneously. Its application is situated in a field of great impact as the improvement of vision is.

In the field of science and technology of colour three main objectives will also be tackled:

i) Development of new multispectral systems for the optical and visual characterization of materials with special optical properties (goniochromatism, luminiscense, textures, etc.), which can contribute to the solution of some existing problems. These systems with response in the UV-VIS-IR will be able to be used in fields of unquestionable interest such as medical image, digitalization of artworks and automatic measurement of the skin colour.

ii) Synthesis of nanopigments, with special emphasis on the enlargement of colour range and coloration of different materials using nanopigments.

iii) Multispectral printing, developing new multispectral systems to allow printers calibration and suggesting new characterization models for these devices.

The majority component of the project is of applied research and technological development and the results can be of wide application in different sectors of social and industrial interest like the biomedical, oftallmic, biochemical, chemistry of colorants, textile, plastics, paintings, multimedia image technologies, motors, construction materials, etc. In the project, applications in different fields with the collaboration of
technological institutes and companies interested in the obtained results and their possible transference are included.
