SASACI: Smart Assistance System for Architecture and Construction Industry

One of the largest economic sectors in Europe is the architecture, engineering and construction sector. However, low productivity is still a major issue in this industry, which remains plagued by rework, inefficiencies and downtime causing over 98% of construction projects to incur in cost overruns and delays. The main causes of these inefficiencies are the lack of: communication between the different parties in the construction process, adequate visualization capabilities to recognize design conflicts, tools for proper project planning and monitoring, and tools for facility operations management. In these regards, the use of Building Information Modeling methodology in combination with Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies has revealed to be a very useful tool to address these deficiencies. However, the level of adoption of these technologies by companies remains low, mainly due to the technical limitations of the used AR/VR devices.

In order to provide a solution to these problems, the SASACI project aims at designing and developing a smart assistant device that provides a comprehensive tool at each stage of the construction life cycle. In line with this objective, this assistant will be developed in the form of AR/VR smart glasses, which will integrate specific software for the sector.

In particular, the CD6 from UPC, as part of the consortium formed along with Inmersia Computers S.L and Yoy Simulators, will be in charge of developing an innovative near-eye display optical system to be integrated in the AR/VR glasses, offering a higher level of immersion, interactivity, portability and comfort than current systems do.
