Advanced Biomedical Optical Imaging and Data Analysis

Cristina Massoller, researcher at DONLL-UPC (Nonlinear Dynamics, Nonlinear Optics and Lasers research group) and Meritxell Vilaseca, researcher at CD6-UPC (Centre for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Developement), coordinate BE-OPTICAL, a European project which will develop new optical and photonic technologies capable of providing images with a resolution that overcomes the barrier of light wavelength. This will make effective clinical equipment capable of accurately diagnosing and early heart disease (generating high resolution images to replace current techniques of electrical impulses) and eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and other diseases of the retina. Experimental evidence in the visual field will be held in the Institute of Ocular Microsurgery in Barcelona and Davalor Research Center in Terrassa. At the Max Plank Institute of Germany will work in vivo observation techniques coronary mice.

BE-OPTICAL has a budget of 3.4 million euros and involves a team of eight research centers, universities and companies from five countries.
